The Local News - For November

November 2nd, 2009

Check out the feature- The Local News on WYEP with Cindy Howes each Monday Through Thursday evening at 9pm on 91.3fm.  It’s a one song feature spotlight new local music.

This month new local tracks from

Satin Gum- “Run For Cover” (LP)
Fun indie-pop. This is an upbeat song with a great driving drum line. The vocals slightly resemble Billie Joe of Green Day. The music is well mixed, so it blends together very nicely.

Chet Vincent and The Big Bend- “The Last Night With Marie” (Desert Gold)
Reminiscent of some kind of country swing. The song is slower but moves right along. This band features the unique drawling voice of Chet Vincent with interesting, dark lyrics.

Emily Rodgers- “Hurricane” (Bright Day)
Dark and haunting vocals. This heavily shoe-gaze influenced track will resonate with fans of Mazzy Star, My Bloody Valentine and The Innocence Mission.

Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers- “Carried Away” (East Carson Street)
A Fun and breezy American rock and roll song. This is bar music for the bar on the beach…. with a touch of gospel.

Anti-Valentine’s Day show Friday, February 13th

February 3rd, 2009

Valentine’s Day lurks just around the corner, waiting to trip you up with chocolate hearts, flying Cupids, lacy sentimental cards and expectations of romantic trysts. But what about the lovelorn masses abandoned by their feckless paramours? Who cares for the bitter wallflower who glowers at the oblivious lovers? And who will acknowledge the beleaguered partner who is desperately attempting to extract themselves from an obtrusive relationship?

Fear not non-lovers of the world. Songwriters everywhere have been recording the audacious, thoughtless, even vicious nature of love. Come February 13th WYEP’s Anti-Valentine’s Day show will try to keep the world in balance with an alternative view of the holiday with some of the best songs written about the vulgarity of love.

If you have a favorite song about bad love, no love, or too much love, send your ideas my way. I’m Rosemary Welsch and I’ll be your host for WYEP’s Anti-Valentine’s Day Show on Friday, February 13th from 2 until 6pm. Feel free to include details about how the song relates to some of your worst experiences in the pursuit of (or away from) love!

Send you requests to Rosemary@wyep.org

Pittsburgh Performance Project: Listener Memories Pt. 1!

July 3rd, 2008

PPP logo

Whether you love our Top 12 Pittsburgh Performance Project venue picks, or are ready to trash the dressing room in a fit of rage, it’s undeniable that you have some great memories of Pittsburgh concerts.

We asked you to submit your favorite recollections of live music. Here are a few of them–we’ll be posting memories every few days. Make sure to post your own comments and memories below!

“A local band sang at the Decade in June 1986, ‘Don’t go to Kiev. Don’t go to Kiev. There’s radiation there, you’re gonna lose your hair. Don’t go to Kiev.’ So irreverent when everyone was leary of the impact of the Chernobyl cloud.” - Sara S.

“I was living in Erie when West View Park closed down and became the suburban eyesore it is today, but my parents raved about Danceland, where they met. My Mother still has her dance card, and many fond memories of big bands and riding the trolleys from Mount Oliver to West View. Everyone from Duke Ellington to The Rolling Stones played there.” - Anonymous WYEP listener

“A most memorable show for me occurred at Soldiers and Sailors in Oakland which featured Patty Griffin, Emmylou Harris, Bruce Cockburn, Steve Earl and Shawn Colvin. I remember that you could hear a pin drop in there, especially when Patty sang.” - K.D.

Don’t forget to sign up for WYEP’s Pittsburgh Performance Project launch party on July 18th!
